Sensex recovers after morning crash, ends 28 pts higher

After plunging 519 points in early trade, the Sensex on Wednesday made a smart recovery to close 28.07 points higher at 17,996.15 supported by strength in IT, metal and pharma stocks despite the rupee hitting new all-time low.
Surging oil prices on back of heightened geopolitical tension over possible US-led coalition attack on Syria and a sinking rupee cast shadow on the stock market today with the Sensex plummeting to 17,448.71 in the early stages of trade.
However, a wave of value-buying led by institutional investors like LIC and mutual funds helped stock markets recover even as FIIs dumped bluechip stocks, brokers said.
Stocks also recovered as investors covered their pending long positions created in the recent bear-run ahead of the monthly derivatives contract expiry on Thursday, they added.

End dirty affair with garbage

Do we have a dirty city because we have a throwaway ethic, or is it because our government is not efficient enough to handle the waste generated by a fast-growing metropolis? It would appear to be a mix of both.
There is little doubt that a lot of waste could have fresh life in some other form and can be kept out of Chennai’s garbage bins, with sufficient commitment from citizens. As these columns have highlighted over several days now, mixing waste of different kinds and sending it to the dump sites where it is mostly burnt only creates problems for suburban residents.
Toxic fumes are released into the air, and a lot of harmful chemicals leach into the groundwater, while the area used to dump mountains of trash is constantly growing.

Gold scales to eight-month high at Rs 31,525

Gold prices took another jump of Rs. 515 to scale an eight-month high of Rs. 31,525 per ten gram in New Delhi on Saturday on sustained buying by stockists and investors.
After its biggest single day rise in two years on Friday, the precious metal advanced to a level last seen on December 18, 2012 due to tumbling rupee and stocks.
The rally in precious metals sparked after rupee plunged to all-time low of 61.65 against American currency, raising fears the dollar-denominated metal would become costlier and restrict supply into the market after the RBI prohibited inward shipment of gold coins.
Investors rushing to bullion as a safe haven following free fall in equities and Forex further influenced the market sentiment. Firming global trend was another positive factor for the precious metals.

Mamata Banerjee serves ultimatum on GJM

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday served a 72-hour ultimatum to the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leadership for lifting the bandh in the Darjeeling hills, which entered its eight day on Saturday. She also asked the Centre not to pursue a divide and rule policy or to interfere in the state’s business.
Addressing a press meet at the State Secretariat, she strongly condemned the bandh as well the separatist movement, which was revived by the GJM leaders in the wake of the decision to form Telegana state.
Sending out a strong message she said: “I will not let go of Darjeeling.. it is very close to my heart. People should also know that Darjeeling has a democratically elected government as its guardian to protect the interest of its people and the region”.
Citing a recent High Court order she said she will now be “rough and tough.. Independence Day is approaching.. this ( the obstruction caused by the bandh) cannot go on.. schools will have to be reopened, offices will have to resume work development work has to go on”, she said.
Ms. Banerjee also said that the second man in the Gorkha Territorial Administration would be asked to take charge in view of the resignation tendered by its chairman.
Without taking names, she said “I appeal to the leadership to restore peace and development” saying that the state government will fulfil its Constitutional obligations. “We will be forced to take strong action”.
PTI adds:
A top GJM leader was arrested here on Saturday in connection with cases of arson and attempt to murder even as the indefinite bandh to demand for separate Gorkhaland state in Darjeeling hills entered eighth day with the hill station wearing a deserted look.
Narayan Pradhan, president of GJM Darjeeling Town Committee, was arrested early Saturday for cases of arson, attempt to murder and other criminal cases, police said.
Acting on a tip-off, he was taken into custody early in the morning from a location in Darjeeling town, taking the total number of arrests to 149 in the hills, the police said.
Meanwhile, the bandh continues to paralyse life with shortage of food reported across the hills.
All shops and other commercial establishments have been closed since the beginning of the indefinite bandh.
Vehicular traffic on NH-31A, the lifeline of Sikkim, was also hit

Two students assaulted for celebrating Id with Hindu girls

An Id celebration went horribly wrong for a
group of students when some men from a
Hindu right-wing group allegedly assaulted two
Muslim students for having lunch with Hindu
girls at a hotel at Puttur on Thursday.
Around 1 p.m., Abdul Samad (21), a student of
MSW at Srinivas College at Pandeshwar in the
city, and Muhammad Jalal (18), a II PU student
at Puttur, and five girls from his college met at
a hotel at Puttur town for an Id-ul-Fitr meal,
according to the police.
While Samad and Jalal had come to the town to
celebrate the festival with their parents, the
girls from his college had come for project
work.
In his complaint, Samad said a group of men
took objection to them eating together, and
followed the boys as they took an
autorickshaw. The men stopped the
autorickshaw and assaulted them. The duo
suffered minor injuries.
Arrested
Four of the accused — Suraj, Sachin, Avinash
and Chandra Singh — have been arrested. The
Puttur police are on the lookout for the rest.

He got wife’s kidney, gold medal at games

R. Harikumar was the average middle class guy who, in his own words, “went to school, ate, slept and played, went to work, fell in love, got married.” What happened subsequently, however, yanked him clear out of his middle-class life and catapulted him elsewhere. And when he landed, he had a gold medal hanging around his neck.
Harikumar threw the discus to a distance of 18.44 m to land the gold medal at the World Transplant Games held in Durban, South Africa, earlier this month. The World Transplant Games are the equivalent of the Olympics for persons who have undergone transplants, and are held once in two years. Harikumar, 27, qualified for the games two years ago, when he underwent a kidney transplant, the donor being his wife of two months, Saranya.
It started with high blood pressure, and headaches, which were put down to the stress caused by Harikumar’s software job. But on the first Diwali after his marriage, he realised that his consistently high blood pressure had bust his kidneys.

Jayalalithaa wants Centre to include SC Christians in SC list

Noting that social tensions of unbalanced growth between Hindu scheduled castes and Christian converts have only “aggravated” over time, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday said the Centre should treat scheduled caste Christians on par with Hindus, Sikhs or Buddhists and include them in the SC list.
“The social tensions over the status of unbalanced growth between Hindu scheduled castes and Christian converts have aggravated over time and a sense of alienation among the minority communities has further deepened. I wish to emphasise that the matter cannot brook any further delay,” Ms. Jayalalithaa said in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Two dental college students surrender at police station

Two Dental college students, a Sri Lankan refugee and the daughter of an Army officer from Kerala, on Thursday surrendered at an all-women's police station here, with a request to help them get the consent of their parents to lead a peaceful married life.

Their decision to do so followed a complaint given by the girl's father sometime ago that she was missing, police said.

Police said Stefi Agnus (19) and Gajendran (20) of Jaffna in Sri Lanka were doing B.D.S course at MGR Medical University Dental college when they fell in love. They got married recently at a temple at Palani and later decided to surrender at a women's police station.

The girl told women police personnel she would live only with her husband and urged them not to hand her back to her parents as she was afraid of them.

Moe and Mirvat’s Story

My Name is Moe am 27 years old, I live in United Arab Emirates, in Abu Dhabi, and 14 years ago when I was like 13 years old, I was in love with a girl she used to live next door, every day I used to stay 9 hours just waiting for school to finish so I can go and wait her to come from school just to look at her sweet lovely eyes.
So when the school bus drop me home I just go running to the bathroom to take a shower, put on my perfume, and put on the best clothes I have every single day.
I go call my best friend and ask him to go out waiting with me, her maid used to wait her too, with her small little brother and his name is Moe too, he was 2 years old that time he used to be so cute, I used to spend all the time playing football (a game I hate) with him just to see her kissing him when she arrived from school and I stayed this way months without even telling her about my feelings.
